Media, Society, Culture and... Us?

It seems to me that Mark Poepsel’s new textbook, Media, Society, Culture and You is coming at a pretty important time in our history of politicized media and mediated politics. Being media literate and aware of how mass communications happen allows us to see through some of what’s going on in the world, whether online, offline, or in broadcast media.

And even more, for us in the OER community and with an interest in openness more generally, there’s a real need to talk about the links (and disconnects) between contemporary media and ‘open’.

What do you think? What are the mediation effects on openness that are brought about by mass media? What do the media need to do to demonstrate openness? Who needs to read this textbook in your opinion, and how can it help them (and us) think through these questions more?
