The project team is excited to invite peer reviewers to provide feedback on our forthcoming Open Access monograph, Marking Open and Affordable Courses: Best Practices and Case Studies. Please note that experience implementing course markings is not necessary to serve as a peer reviewer for this project. Contributors only need to have an interest in course marking implementation and an eagerness to participate in open, collaborative scholarship. Peer review start dates are flexible, with the first cohort of reviewers beginning in early October. Additional review periods and deadlines are listed under Expectations below.
Volunteers will be accepted on a rolling basis until all slots are filled; those who express interest early are more likely to be selected and assigned their preferred content areas. Please complete the form below to express interest.
About the Book
Marking Open and Affordable Courses is intended to serve as a practical guide for institutions navigating the uncharted waters of tagging course material as open educational resources (OER) or under a “low cost” threshold by summarizing relevant state legislation, providing tips for working with stakeholders, and analyzing technological and process considerations. The book is divided into two main sections. The first section provides high-level analysis of the technology, legislation, and cultural change needed to operationalize course markings. The second section presents tangible case studies for those interested in how others have implemented course markings. The intended audience for the book is administrators, librarians, campus store managers, instructors, registrars, and other professionals interested in OER and affordable resource marking at any size or type of institution, including community colleges, liberal arts colleges, and research institutions. Expectations
Reviewers are needed to provide close review of selected portions of the manuscript totaling approximately 25-35 pages each. Additionally, we are seeking a small number of reviewers to read and provide high-level feedback on the full manuscript, which is approximately 225 pages. All reviewers are expected to read the book’s introduction. Reviewers should specify their preferences for review when signing up. Reviewers will have access to the full manuscript and are welcome to review and annotate sections beyond those assigned for formal review
Volunteers will be added to the project on an ongoing basis beginning immediately for an initial review period beginning October 1. Peer review is expected to be completed within six weeks following the date the reviewer receives access to the manuscript. The date of access may vary for reviewers, as defined below:
- Access Date: October 1; Review Deadline: November 12
- Access Date: October 8; Review Deadline: November 19
- Access Date: October 15; Review Deadline: November 26
- Access Date: October 22; Review Deadline: December 3
How to Sign Up
This project is managed via the Rebus Community’s web-based software for managing open textbook projects. We aim for transparency in the publication process by recruiting and interacting with project participants, managing activities, and holding discussions on the project’s public site. Thus, we play an important role in helping our community test and refine tools that advance the creation of OER.
Please review the project’s Peer Reviewer Guide and then complete the peer reviewer form to express interest in serving as a peer reviewer. In the spirit of transparency, content submitted via the form will be publicly available.
