Office Hours: Multimedia in Open Textbooks

Topic: Multimedia in Open Textbooks
When: Thursday, 19 March 2020, 2 pm ET / 11 am PT / 6 pm UTC
Guest Speakers: Naomi Salmon (Instructional Consultant, University of Madison-Wisconsin), Chelsea Green (Associate Professor of Music, The American University in Cairo (AUC)), Nadine Aboulmagd (Senior Instructional Designer, Digital Education, The Center for Learning and Teaching, AUC), and Josie Gray (Advisor, Inclusive Design and OER Collections, BCcampus).

Even the oldest textbooks in existence used illumination to augment ideas, and many were designed to be interactive by leaving significant margins for students to take notes, annotate, and even doodle. Today, the ways in which we can engage students outside the written word are only growing. In this month’s Office Hours, our guests will share their experiences of creating open textbooks with audio, video, interactive activities and other media. We will address technical questions, how to ensure accessibility for all students, and how to not let a fun new toy distract from the core learning objectives.
