About the Project
After helping Registered Nurses (RNs) complete their Bachelor of Science-Nursing (BSN) journey in traditional and competency-based formats, the authors agreed that something was still missing. Nursing is a field with a number of roles, paths, and ways to get involved, but did students completing their BSN degree understand what doors this opened for them? The professional standard has become to be baccalaureate prepared which has prompted numerous health care organizations to assist their nurses in meeting this standard. But, after this requirement/standard is met, our experience is that students aren’t fully aware of their potential or the opportunities the BSN degree brings. This resource is intended to provide students with an opportunity to become aware of opportunities and roles they are now qualified for, discover ongoing professional development options, and to reflect on their future plans and goals. This resource will build on a strong curriculum focused on baccalaureate essentials while helping to build a more professionally-minded nursing workforce.
Motivators
When assigned to discuss the evidence supporting an increase in BSN prepared nurses, students often still advocate for the role of the ADN (Associate Degree Nurse) in healthcare. The motivation to complete the BSN degree is often clearly to satisfy an employer’s requirement or to earn an incentive from their organization. There seems to be a gap in knowledge about the responsibilities, opportunities, and commitment to lifelong learning that come with the BSN degree.
Audience
The audience for this resource is practicing Associate Degree Nurses (ADNs) pursuing the completion of their Bachelor of Science-Nursing (BSN) degree with the aim of better preparing them to be professional nurses capable and qualified to hold higher ranked positions and pursue new opportunities.
