Session 7: Content Creation

Thank you @may24a-cohort for your participation in today’s session. Remember, if you missed, the video will be posted in our LOUIS document. Please find here our brief recap and all resources related to the session for your reference:

The creation of content is obviously the most important stage in the process. The work you do at this early point can make the next phases of editing, review, and formatting much easier. As OER content creators or contributors, your project teams can change the status quo in education.

With your student audience at the core of your efforts, you can develop both OER and specific pedagogical methods that in synthesis will work to support accessible and inclusive learning. Well-structured content not only helps your students identify what matters to the discipline and specific courses, but also what matters to them. Thus we looked closely how specific elements in textbooks/ OER can work to represent and support your diverse learners on the book and chapter levels.

Homework Activity

Thinking through the structure of your OER will take some time and dedication, but we hope that the homework activity will guide your team’s discussion around the structure and parts in your resource [see handout linked above]. It will help you redefine the alignment of your content with the envisioned outcomes for your project, so you can determine the parts that will further enrich your OER and make it stand out within your discipline. Feel free to browse the examples shared in your handout for inspiration as well.

  1. As a team, please submit a draft of your handout to the OER Chapter Structure Submission (May 2024A Cohort) forum.

  2. As an individual, please respond to this prompt with your update to the checklist:

  • My team has reflected on and refined the learning objectives for our OER to align them with the content we want to adapt and/ or create.
  • My team has drafted an outline of our OER with a table of contents.
  • As a team, we have discussed the chapter structure of our OER with regards to modularity, pedagogical devices and assessment elements.
  • As a team, we have decided what content needs to be produced, adapted, remixed, or researched (text, images, videos, interactive elements, case studies, etc.)

Next week, we will dig a bit deeper into the editing process and how you can set up an effective workflow and smooth logistics that includes checklists, tracking sheets, and an author guide to orientate everybody on your team.

We’ll be meeting as an A & P II cohort next week and will be working on bullet points 3 & 4 then. We finished the first two bullet points in our breakout session today.

As a team we have discussed the chapter structure and are going to discuss the chapter outline and content in the next cohort meeting tomorrow.

Hello all,

The Nutrition cohort had a productive discussion about this assignment, and we also evaluated five OER textbooks.

  • My team has reflected on and refined the learning objectives for our OER to align them with the content we want to adapt or create. We keep adding new, better ideas each time we meet. It’s exciting to work with these subject matter experts.

  • My team has drafted an outline of our OER with a table of contents.

  • As a team, we have discussed the chapter structure of our OER in terms of modularity, pedagogical devices, and assessment elements. We have several ideas for callout boxes, chapter features/tips, and more.

  • As a team, we have decided what content needs to be produced, adapted, remixed, or researched (text, images, videos, interactive elements, case studies, etc.) We are making progress on this point. We will decide more after another meeting or two.

Over the past few weeks, the Foundational Learning Skills team has meet and discussed/written a strong basis for our OER contribution. We have developed a strong idea of the focus, audience and style the final product should involve/contain.
My team has reflected on and refined the learning objectives for our OER to align them with the content we want to adapt and/ or create. – We are in the process of refining this information and should have a solid foundation in the next few weeks.
My team has drafted an outline of our OER with a table of contents. – The outline was begun 7/15 and will be complete soon after.
As a team, we have discussed the chapter structure of our OER with regards to modularity, pedagogical devices and assessment elements. – We have held several discussions concerning these topics. Ensuring the material is clear, informative, interesting and digestible by content consumers is a priority of the team.
As a team, we have decided what content needs to be produced, adapted, remixed, or researched (text, images, videos, interactive elements, case studies, etc.) – this is an ongoing process being worked on and considered carefully.

Our team is on track according to the Session 7 checklist. Our learning objectives are in the final stage of review, and we are looking ahead to chapter learning objectives. We discussed using chapter learning objectives as sections for each chapter. We also decided on a table of contents and will refine the chapter structure of our OER and finalize at our individual group meeting next week.

We have a draft of the learning objectives and the table of contents. We started the discussion regarding the format of each chapter to include case studies, chapter objectives, and practice questions. In future cohort meetings we will dive into the specifics of what needs to be produced/adapted/remixed/researched.

For the Foundational Learning Skills team, we have begun to drill down and define our learning objectives, giving a clear picture of what we hope to accomplish for our target audience. We are not finished, but we have made great progress, including a basic TOC and chapter structure. We recognize that the chapters need, in addition to consistency, a variety of elements, such as text, images, videos, interactive elements, case studies, and more, to provide adaptability options for future instructors. The elements conversation will be ongoing as we begin to develop the content. We do agree that our content modules will be designed with the capability to be stand-alone instruction since our topics are Digital Skills, Financial Literacy, Communication, Time Management, and Goal Setting. This will allow instructors to use one or all of the content.

The Human A & P team is on track for accomplishing the items on the checklist. In our group meeting for this week, we will review and finalize learning objectives. We have already drafted our table of contents. We have begun the conversation regarding chapter structure and will discuss more this week. We will also be discussing in more detail what content we need to produce to support our text.

As Natalie stated, the Intro to Pharmacology cohort has a draft of learning objectives and the table of contents. We have started to discuss the chapter structure and what content needs to be produced, adapted, remixed, or researched. We do need to continue to work on the templates and discuss more during upcoming cohort meetings and during the time allotted during the TSP sessions.
