Description:

Lifelong fitness and wellness textbook

is intended to help students evaluate their personal health habits, behaviors, and attitudes while educating them about how to establish or maintain healthy lifestyle practices to improve both quality and quantity of life. Students learn about risk factors, behavior modification, and goal setting in order to reduce their chances of developing chronic health problems.

Intended use for general education university health/fitness course. Students do not need a background in health/fitness/wellness. Textbook will include interactive assignments intended to engage students in the learning process. Textbook will consist of learning modules with specific learning objectives for each topic area. Please view the “Outline” tab for specific content areas covered in the textbook. Multimedia will also be integrated into the online textbook.

Introduction to Wellness and Behavior Change

Module Overview

In this module, you will learn about the dimensions of wellness, and how wellness differs from health. You will also learn about the stages of behavior change, and begin to think about the possible changes you would like to make in order to improve your personal wellness. Finally, setting SMART goals will be discussed.

Basics of Fitness Program Design

Module Overview

In this module, you will learn about the different components of physical fitness. You will also begin to learn about the principles involved in designing an exercise program.

Cardiorespiratory Fitness

Module Overview

In this module, you will learn about the effects and benefits of cardiorespiratory endurance exercise. You will also learn how to measure, assess, and develop cardiorespiratory endurance. Anatomy and physiology of the cardiorespiratory system will be discussed, as well as the 3 energy systems utilized during exercise.

Muscular Fitness

Module Overview

This module will provide an overview of musculoskeletal anatomy and physiology, training principles for muscular strength and endurance, muscular contractions, and muscle fiber type.

Healthy Eating and Nutrition

Module Overview

This module will provide an overview of basic nutrition, dietary guidelines, using the food label, building healthy eating patterns, and nutrient vs. energy density.

Energy Balance and Weight Management

Module Overview

In this module, you will learn about body composition and weight management. You will learn about the health implications of obesity, factors that contribute to excess body fat, approaches to healthy weight management, and how to set body composition goals.

Chronic Disease Prevention

Module Overview

This module will provide an overview of various chronic diseases (cardiovascular disease, cancer, & diabetes). In addition, strategies used to prevent chronic disease will be discussed.

Substance Use and Misuse

Module Overview

This module will provide an overview of substance use and misuse. Different classifications of drugs will be discussed, as well as the short-term & long-term effects on the body.

Finding Balance and Stress Management

Module Overview

This module will provide an overview of mental health concerns (depression, eating disorders, stress, & body image). You will learn about common sources of stress, the relationship between stress and disease, the importance of sleep, stress management techniques, and time management.
