Description:

Welcome to children’s literature revisited through the lens of anti-oppression pedagogy!

Literature in the Hands of a Child’s Mind: An Unequal Equalizer in Anti-Oppression Pedagogy

will be a comprehensive examination, critical analysis and integration of, but not limited to, the following: brain based learning theories, anti-oppression pedagogy, cultural competency, child growth and development theories, epistemology, hierarchy of needs, and social justice. Access to children’s literature and seeing oneself in the literature that is available is not an equal experience for all children. The primary goal for this book is to investigate systemic reasons why children’s literature in children’s hands is unequal while developing an anti-oppressive pedagogy promoting opportunities for ALL children. Knowing children’s literature and its value necessitates learning about books, children, society and us, ourselves, as readers and members of that society. Recognizing the value of children’s literature also requires an examination of society, including but not limited to, class, ability, sex, race, gender identity and gender expression, and sexual orientation in an effort to understand the systemic oppression of members of society that determine if one becomes a reader and/or has access to reading and literacy.

The primary audience will be undergraduate or graduate students of education enrolled in a children’s literature course. These individuals will be pre-service and in-service teachers. Their interest in reading ranges from hating to read to knowing every book in a classic canon; that is, learners will vary from naive, novice consumers of children’s literature to sophisticated consumers reading this text. Secondary audiences could include the following: children’s literature instructors, librarians, social workers, researchers, psychologists, school counselors, homeschool parents, curriculum developers, district curriculum coordinators, ELL professionals, children’s literature authors, as well as, anyone interested in creating an engaged, lifelong reader and closing the opportunity gap in children’s literature.

By joining us in this project, we hope your world will be richer and forever changed by the study of children’s literature through the lens of anti-oppression pedagogy.
