Summer 2019 Updates to Media Innovation & Entrepreneurship open textbook

Are you still using the Media Innovation & Entrepreneurship open textbook in your course? Please take a moment to let us know by filling out the form below.

Also, the arrival of summer means it’s time to update this living, dynamic text for Fall 2019.

If you would like to suggest changes or updates to a chapter this summer, email us and we’ll review your recommendations as we prep to release v3.

A few changes we know we’ll be making (and please let us know if you can help!):

  • Adding chapters on design thinking and entrepreneurial ecosystem building campus infrastructure (thanks Ann Grimes, Geoffrey Graybeal and Michelle Ferrier)
  • Updating the chapter about changes in the journalism industry to include additional, current examples (thanks Mark Scarp)
  • Adding some formative quizzes and interactive elements to help students self-reflect on what they just read (please let us know if you can help)
  • Improving the glossary now that we have glossary capability

If you are interested in contributing to this CC BY-licensed open resource or to this process, or if you have suggestions on how to improve the text, please let us know (email Liz or Michelle).

Also, we’ll be reconvening the community of practice in a call later this month.

This will be an opportunity for adopters and contributors to have a conversation about potential enhancements we might make this summer and also to build a collaborative to share other resources across institutions.

The call will be held June 25, at 2 p.m. EST. You can join the call day of at https://us04web.zoom.us/j/799514448.

Hi @lizmays

Do you mind if I tweet this from the Rebus Community Twitter account?

Terrific. You can expect to see posts later today. We’ve been using #SmallWins for these kinds of tweets.

Thanks again to those who were able to join us on the call yesterday!

The general consensus is, we’ll do more of these!

Unfortunately, I neglected to record the call, but I’ve created a recap for those who weren’t able to attend here:

As of yesterday’s call, here are the updates the community will be making this summer:

  • Adding chapters on design thinking and entrepreneurial ecosystem / building campus infrastructure (thanks Ann Grimes, Geoffrey Graybeal and Michelle Ferrier)

  • Adding a sidebar to update the chapter about changes in the journalism industry to include additional, current examples, particularly around corporate ownership, mergers and acquisitions (thanks Mark Scarp)

  • Adding a sidebar on private investment in the media space for this same section (thanks Melanie Faizer)

  • Adding a sidebar on “slow news,” solutions journalism and audience engagement (thanks also to Melanie Faizer)

  • Adding some case studies with a startup incubator focus, details TBD (thanks Betty!)

  • Adding some pitch example videos from real students, with permission (thanks Mark Poepsel)

  • Adding some formative quizzes and interactive elements to help students self-reflect on what they just read (Liz has done a few–if just a few people each contributed one quiz question, we’d be adding a lot of interactivity quickly!)

  • Improving the glossary now that we have glossary capability (volunteers needed!)

  • We’d still love to add to some ancillary materials. If you have anything you’d like to share that you can license CC BY, or that is public on the web where we could link out to it, please let Michelle or Liz know.

Also yesterday, we heard from six faculty who have adopted or who are adopting the book in courses from startup incubators to media management, and variations on media entrepreneurship.

Among the needs expressed were opportunities to share syllabi, ways to bring experts (venture capitalists, entrepreneurs, others) into the classroom, and enable students to contact and talk with media entrepreneurs.

Other resources that were suggested to expand the text were: more info on being a media solopreneur, post mortems on media outlets that no longer exist (perhaps a classroom open pedagogy project?) and resources around financials for non-business majors.

As I mentioned, we’d like to take many of the conversations around the book out of email and into a public venue where we can continue to grow this community of practice. We will be doing that here in the Rebus Community. You can sign up to the Rebus Community forum and join this or other conversations about the open textbook and the community around it.

Of course, if you have content to submit for editing, email is best for that. I’ve created a gmail just for the book, so please use this email going forward when an email is needed: mieopentextbook@gmail.com

Thanks again for your enthusiasm yesterday, and stay tuned here for further updates!

Best,

Liz

An update: We’ve begun adding the summer updates to the open textbook, with a few more to come between now and start of school in late August.
