Session 1: Introductions

Hello @may24b-cohort! It was wonderful to meet so many of you and to see all teams in our cohort represented at our first session today!

The main focus was to get to know one another’s projects, understand how our sessions will be structured, and learn about Rebus’ tools and approaches.

We also spent a bit of time discussing Rebus’ collaborative approach to publishing, and how a larger community around a resource can not only make it stronger but also help maintain it down the line. Our approach hinges on thinking about communications, accessibility, formatting, and more at each stage to really harness the global potential of OER. And these stages can and most likely will be flexible, and thus play out in different ways for each team — that’s what the model is built to do!

Talking about the tools we use for the Textbook Success Program like Curriculum Hub in Google, for instance, we also mentioned the Rebus Community Forum, where this recap is posted and where we will conveniently streamline ALL our cohort communication. All materials will be available to you throughout the program. We encourage you to share your questions here! Please note that you can use the tag @may24b-cohort for conversations that include all cohort members. In addition, you can also write direct messages to individuals, not only in your cohort, but the entire forum space.

Please be sure to complete this week’s activities as outlined in your session handout:

  • Reply below in this thread with a brief introduction, including your role on the project and the dream goal(s) you have for it.
  • Agree to the Memorandum of Understanding for our cohort.

Here is a link to the chat transcript for today: Session 1: Introductions (May 2024 B Cohort)

Many thanks to @jmouton for capturing a video recording of today’s session! We should have all of the technical issues worked out to record in Zoom starting next week. Here’s the link to today’s recording: VidGrid - TSP May B Cohort Session 1.

I will see you all next Tuesday for Session 2: Project Scoping. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. Thank you!!

Hello, Everyone,
I have been teaching in higher education since 2017 as an adjunct instructor at Fletcher Technical Community College. I am also the Director of Adult Education and an adjunct instructor with River Parishes Community College. Some of my prior higher education roles included advising and career coaching. I teach Business Courses, Customer Service (communication) Skills, Financial Literacy, Digital Literacy, and Integrated Career Skills (career exploration, time management, and goal setting).

Before higher education, my career included ten years in the financial industry, five years in healthcare, and twelve years in business ownership. I have an MBA and am currently a 2025 EDD candidate with a concentration in Adult Education.

I have not technically written an OER before, but I have created a Customer Service course from scratch with all of the course content built into the Canvas course - no textbook needed, so something very similar. I am looking forward to working with all of you.

Hi Sarina! You’re actually in the May 2024 A Cohort - do you mind hopping over to the May 2024 A Cohort to sign the MOU and post your introduction there? Thanks!

I hopped over. I did the MOU, but I didn’t see the introduction there.

Hello! My name is Kim Uddo. I teach in the nursing department for Delgado Community College and have served since 1999. I try to jump on quick to online opportunities such as this! I loved the online classes by Fielding called Teaching in the Online Classroom. I did create a Summer Nurse Refresher Hybrid course that received the Quality Matters Seal of Approval. I went back late in my career to earn my Doctor of Nursing Practice at Loyola, which was online with steroids! I also have a part time job teaching for American Public University (American Military) and was given the opportunity to convert two graduate classes to OER! I hope to serve well, do my part, not drop the ball, and collaborate with my Med Surg II team to create an awesome online learning experience. I am thankful to be here. Kim Uddo

Hi everyone,
I am one of the Librarian Cohort leaders for Intro to Nursing. I’m really excited to be a part of this, as I’ve worked on LOUIS OER Textbook projects in the past. My biggest take away from these projects is the long-term friendships and connections I’ve enjoyed from participating in past projects. Learning more from colleagues in Louisiana has given me a wealth of knowledge and helped me grow in my profession.
